Abstract

Conversational artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, has revolutionized students’ interactions with technology, shifting from information-search-oriented strategies toward a more dialogic and interactive approach. This study aims to examine patterns of student interaction with ChatGPT through the lens of Human-Machine Communication (HMC). This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. Based on the findings, students use ChatGPT for both academic and non-academic purposes, including creating social media content, editing images, sharing stories, and as a conversation partner. This study reveals two main interaction patterns: an instructional pattern focused on task completion and a relational pattern characterized by sustained conversation, the use of polite language, and a sense of comfort in communication. These findings reinforce the Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) theory and demonstrate that ChatGPT has functioned as a communicative agent, assisting students in communicating during various daily activities.
