Abstract

The escalation of the geopolitical conflict between the United States and Iran has triggered global economic repercussions, including rising inflation and prices of basic necessities in Indonesia. These conditions have prompted the public to use social media particularly TikTok as a platform to respond to these issues through political satire. This study aims to analyze political satire in TikTok content related to the impact of the U.S.–Iran conflict on Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative approach using Rodney H. Jones’s Digital Discourse Analysis method, which focuses on the dimensions of text, context, action and interaction, as well as ideology and power. The results indicate that creators utilize humor, irony, and parody to frame the complex impacts of the U.S.–Iran conflict into a form of “politainment” that is easier to understand and captures the audience’s attention. Political satire narratives not only function as a communication strategy to convey criticism of the impact of geopolitical conflicts but also represent symbolic resistance through the use of symbols, irony, and parody as a non-confrontational form of resistance against socio-political conditions. This study concludes that social media serves as a discursive space that enables the public to construct collective criticism and express symbolic resistance against socio-political realities through digital communication practices.
