Abstract
Soft soil presents a major challenge in geotechnical engineering due to its inherently low bearing capacity, high compressibility, and prolonged consolidation time, which can lead to excessive settlement and structural failure. Ground improvement is therefore necessary to enhance the mechanical properties and characteristics of soft soil prior to its use as a construction subgrade. This study employs bamboo chips and fly ash as stabilizing agents, where bamboo chips serve as a reinforcing material capable of improving soil strength through a fiber reinforcement effect, while fly ash — a byproduct of coal-fired power plants — possesses pozzolanic properties that contribute to increased soil strength and stability. This study aims to investigate the effect of bamboo chips and fly ash combinations on the optimization of mechanical properties and characteristics of soft soil, with bamboo chips content varying at 25%, 30%, and 35%, and Type C fly ash fixed at 15%. The soft soil samples, classified as OH according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), were obtained from the campus area of UPN "Veteran" East Java using a hand auger method. Mechanical testing included the California Bearing Ratio (CBR), Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), and Unconsolidated-Undrained (UU) Triaxial tests. The results indicate that the addition of 15% fly ash alone increased the CBR value from 4,83% to 8,93% and the UCS from 0,301 kg/cm² to 3,768 kg/cm². The combination of 25% bamboo chips and 15% fly ash was identified as the optimum variation, yielding the highest CBR of 14,67%, UCS of 4,085 kg/cm², and an undrained shear strength (Cu) of 172,667 kPa at the highest confining pressure. Bamboo chips content exceeding 25% exhibited a declining strength trend, attributed to the reduced effectiveness of fly ash cementation bonding. The overall improvement in mechanical properties is attributed to the synergistic effect between the pozzolanic reaction of fly ash and the role of bamboo chips as physical reinforcement elements that enhance interparticle interlocking.
