Abstract
Batik industrial wastewater contains various pollutants, particularly heavy metals such as chromium (Cr) and cadmium (Cd), as well as Total Suspended Solids (TSS), which have the potential to pollute the environment and harm human health. Therefore, an effective and environmentally friendly treatment method is needed, one of which is electrocoagulation. This study aims to examine the effect of varying electrolysis voltage and time on the efficiency of reducing Cr, Cd, and TSS levels in batik wastewater using aluminum (Al) electrodes as the anode and zinc (Zn) as the cathode. The electrocoagulation process was carried out in batches with varying voltages of 10–50 volts and electrolysis times of 80–160 minutes. Metal content analysis was performed using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), while TSS was analyzed using the gravimetric method. Initial analysis results showed Cr levels of 3.78 mg/L, Cd levels of 2.55 mg/L, and TSS levels of 203.77 mg/L, which exceeded environmental quality standards. The results showed that increasing the electrolysis voltage and time significantly increased the removal efficiency of Cr, Cd, and TSS. This was due to the increased formation of Al³⁺ and OH⁻ ions, which produced aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)₃) flocs, which act as coagulants capable of binding and precipitating contaminants. The optimum conditions were achieved at a voltage of 50 volts and a time of 160 minutes, with a final Cr content of 0.031 mg/L with a removal percentage of 99.18%, Cd content of 0.021 mg/L with a removal percentage of 99.176%, and TSS content of 39.44 mg/L with a removal percentage of 80.86%, thus meeting the established quality standards. Thus, the electrocoagulation method using aluminum-zinc electrodes has proven effective, efficient, and has the potential for application in the treatment of batik industrial wastewater.
