Abstract
This study aims to utilize breadfruit peel (Artocarpus altilis) waste as a raw material for the production of oxalic acid through the alkaline fusion method. Breadfruit peel was selected because it contains a relatively high cellulose content, making it a potential feedstock for producing value-added products. The study was conducted by varying the sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration at 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4 N, and the stirring speed at 300, 400, 500, 600, and 700 rpm, with a fusion temperature of 90°C for 60 minutes. The resulting product was characterized based on the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) parameters through melting point, pH, organoleptic, functional group analysis using FTIR, yield calculation, and purity determination by the acid-base titration method. The results showed that the cellulose content of dried breadfruit peel was 17.14%, indicating that it is suitable as a raw material for oxalic acid synthesis. The product exhibited characteristics in accordance with the SNI standards, namely a fine white powder, odorless, with a melting point of 188–189°C and a pH ranging from 1.18 to 1.21. FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of the characteristic functional groups of oxalic acid, namely hydroxyl (O–H), carbonyl (C=O), and C–O bonds. The yield increased with increasing NaOH concentration and stirring speed up to the optimum condition, then decreased at excessively high NaOH concentrations due to cellulose degradation. The optimum condition was obtained at a NaOH concentration of 3.5 N and a stirring speed of 700 rpm, resulting in an oxalic acid yield of 63.16% and a purity of 97.88%. These results indicate that the alkaline fusion method is effective in producing high-quality oxalic acid from breadfruit peel waste and has the potential to serve as an alternative approach for the valorization of biomass waste with economic value.
