Abstract

Gender inequality remains a persistent social issue experienced by women in various aspects of life. Mass media, particularly films, play an important role in representing and shaping public perceptions of gender issues. Pangku (2025) portrays the life of Sartika, a woman who faces various forms of gender injustice due to patriarchal culture and unfavorable socio-economic conditions. This study aims to analyze the representation of gender inequality against women in Pangku (2025) using Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis. This research employed a qualitative approach within a critical paradigm. The analytical method used was Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis, which focuses on the positions of the subject, object, and audience in a discourse. The research data were obtained through observations of scenes, dialogues, and visual elements in the film Pangku. The findings were then analyzed using Mansour Fakih's concept of gender inequality, which consists of marginalization, subordination, stereotyping, violence, and double burden. The findings reveal that Sartika is positioned as both the subject and the object of discourse. As the subject, she is given the opportunity to express her experiences and struggles in confronting various life challenges. Conversely, as the object, she becomes the target of stigma, discrimination, exploitation, and unequal power relations constructed by patriarchal culture. Furthermore, the film positions the audience to empathize with Sartika's experiences and understand that the injustices she faces are consequences of structural gender inequality embedded within society. The study also identifies five forms of gender inequality represented in the film: marginalization through limited access to employment opportunities and social services; subordination that places women in an inferior position to men; stereotyping through negative labeling of women; violence in the form of physical, psychological, and exploitative acts; and the double burden requiring women to perform both domestic responsibilities and economic roles simultaneously. This study concludes that Pangku not only represents the reality of gender inequality experienced by women but also serves as a medium of social criticism toward patriarchal culture that perpetuates gender discrimination. The film encourages audiences to critically examine the representation of women in the media and raises awareness of the importance of achieving gender equality. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Sara Mills, Gender Inequality, Women, Pangku Film.
