Abstract

Social media has transformed how local culture is produced, represented, and interpreted by society in the digital era. Amidst the currents of modernization, the digitalization of regional arts has become a crucial step to remain relevant for the younger generation. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the preservation and revitalization practices of East Javanese arts represented through the Instagram content of @cak_durasim, as well as to understand the dynamics of digital interaction and the process of cultural meaning-making by its audience. To achieve these objectives, the research method employed was qualitative with a virtual ethnography approach. Data collection was conducted through online participant observation on the @cak_durasim account and in-depth interviews with two account managers and five active followers. The collected data were then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis model, integrated with Stuart Hall’s Representation Theory and Edward T. Hall’s Cultural Communication Theory to dissect the transmitted cultural messages. The results showed that the @cak_durasim account represented East Javanese arts through modern visual elements and interactive narratives based on digital education and documentation. Revitalization practices were carried out by adapting content formats to social media trends without altering the core rules (pakem) or authenticity of traditional values. Digital interactions in the form of likes and comments confirmed a dynamic audience engagement, ranging from appreciative responses to critical contributions toward cultural preservation. The study concludes that the @cak_durasim Instagram account successfully constructed itself as an effective digital cultural "showcase" that bridges traditional heritage with the younger generation, although this digital space could not fully replace the emotional depth of direct live performances.
