Abstract
This study aims to examine the process of managing and sharing personal information involving a young woman who is a victim of her parents’ divorce as she determines the criteria for an ideal partner. This study explores the dynamics of establishing privacy boundaries regarding the child’s future romantic relationships with a single parent (mother) following divorce, using a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with ten female informants aged 18–25 years. The theoretical framework used in this study focuses on Sandra Petronio’s Theory of Communication Privacy Management. The results indicate that the process of sharing information from the informants to their mothers regarding partner criteria tends to be selective and subject to strict boundaries. Based on the negotiation of these boundaries, it was found that the criteria for an ideal partner expected by the daughters focused on a figure with a character distinct from that of their father, ranging from personality traits and responsibility to shared religious principles. The communication barriers identified take the form of “privacy turbulence,” which occurs when differences in views regarding criteria standards arise between children and parents, potentially triggering conflict, anxiety about negative judgment, or leading to the child further tightening information boundaries.
