Abstract
The rapid development of generative Artificial Intelligence, particularly ChatGPT, has shifted communication from human-to-human to human-to-machine interaction. This phenomenon is evident among Generation Z individuals from broken-home backgrounds, who often experience emotional communication gaps and turn to ChatGPT as an alternative safe space. This study aims to analyze how broken-home Generation Z in Surabaya interact with ChatGPT using the Human-Machine Communication (HMC) framework. A qualitative descriptive method with a constructivist paradigm was applied, using in-depth interviews with eight informants. Data were analyzed through the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model. The findings indicate that ChatGPT use evolves from a functional tool into a medium for emotional communication. Functionally, it provides solutions and emotional validation. Relationally, users show high self-disclosure as ChatGPT is perceived as safe and neutral. Metaphysically, it is interpreted as a tool, a friend, and even a substitute for missing emotional roles. Three interaction patterns were identified: high dependency, adaptive-reflective, and instrumental-controlled. This study highlights the importance of maintaining conscious control so that ChatGPT remains a complementary partner rather than a replacement for human relationships.
