Abstract

This study aims to analyze how young adults practice self-disclosure and privacy management while engaging in situationships within urban communities. The phenomenon of situationships has become increasingly common as romantic relationships among young adults shift toward emotionally intimate yet non-committal forms of interaction. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach within a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eleven participants aged 21–27 years who were currently or had previously been involved in situationships in several major cities across Indonesia. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model, supported by Social Penetration Theory, Communication Privacy Management Theory, and Uncertainty Reduction Theory. The findings reveal that self-disclosure develops gradually through the process of social penetration, beginning with superficial topics and progressing toward more intimate personal information as trust and emotional closeness increase. This process is characterized by reciprocal self-disclosure; however, participants continue to maintain certain personal information as private due to the absence of relationship commitment and concerns over emotional vulnerability. The study also found that privacy management is primarily governed by implicit privacy rules, while breaches of trust trigger privacy turbulence, resulting in reduced self-disclosure and declining relationship quality. These findings suggest that interpersonal communication within situationships is a dynamic negotiation process shaped by trust, reciprocity, communication quality, and uncertainty regarding relationship status. Keywords: self-disclosure, privacy management, situationship, urban young adults, interpersonal communication.
