Abstract

Sexual violence against women remains a social issue influencedbypatriarchal culture, unequal power relations, and cultural practices that mayrestrict women's access to justice. Women From Rote Island represented theseissues through various forms of women's resistance within the cultural context of the Rote community. This study aimed to analyze audience reception of therepresentation of women's resistance in Women From Rote Island. A qualitativeapproach was employed using Stuart Hall's reception analysis. Participants wereselected through purposive sampling and consisted of six viewers aged 18–40years with diverse backgrounds. Data were collected through in-depth interviewsand documentation and were analyzed inductively through transcription, datareduction, coding based on Stuart Hall's reading positions, categorization, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that audiencereception was dominated by the dominant-hegemonic reading position, whileasmaller number of participants demonstrated negotiated reading, andnooppositional reading was identified. Dif erences in audience reception wereinfluenced by social experiences, cultural proximity, education, and exposuretogender equality issues. The study concluded that the representation of women'sresistance in the film was not interpreted uniformly but was negotiated accordingto each audience member's social experience and cultural context. These findingsindicated that the film not only represented social reality but also functionedas amedium for audiences to reflect upon patriarchy, sexual violence, and the positionof women in society.
