Abstract
This study aims to identify and describe the self-disclosure practices of Generation Z couples undergoing a Long Distance Marriage (LDM) during the first one to five years of marriage. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach within a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five married couples selected using purposive sampling, supported by documentation. Data analysis followed three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that self-disclosure among Gen Z couples in LDM occurs intensely, selectively, and dynamically, expressed through consistent digital communication such as text messages and video calls, particularly in the evening. Couples selectively decide what information to share based on their partner's emotional condition and its potential impact on the relationship, while still upholding honesty reflecting the amount, valence, accuracy, and intention dimensions of DeVito's self-disclosure concept. The presence of children shifts the purpose of self-disclosure from sharing daily experiences toward seeking emotional support. Couples also practice joint privacy management, including in financial matters, consistent with Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory, and demonstrate the openness-closedness dialectic described in Relational Dialectics Theory. Jealousy and possessiveness that arise during LDM tend to encourage greater self-disclosure to strengthen trust, while social media plays a dual role as both a source of suspicion and a means of transparency in the relationship. The study concludes that self-disclosure serves as an essential communication strategy for Generation Z couples in maintaining harmony within long-distance marriages during the early years of marriage.
