Abstract
Ratu-Ratu Queens: The Series (2025) is a Netflix original Indonesian series that represents the lives of four Indonesian diaspora women in Queens, New York. The series serves as a prequel to the film Ali & Ratu-Ratu Queens (2021). Through the characters of Party, Ance, Biyah, and Chinta, the series presents a complex and realistic narrative of the struggles diaspora women face in their daily lives as they navigate survival in a major city abroad. The series emerges amid a prevailing public discourse that has long framed life overseas as synonymous with prosperity and success. Ratu-Ratu Queens, however, challenges this idealized imagination by exposing the gap between expectation and the reality experienced by diaspora individuals. This study aims to analyze how the discourse of Indonesian women's diaspora life is constructed in Ratu-Ratu Queens. This study employs Teun A. Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework, encompassing three analytical dimensions: text, social cognition, and social context. The text dimension examines how narrative structure, word choice, and character portrayal construct particular discourses. The social cognition dimension explores the ideology and mental models underlying the production of the text. The social context dimension investigates the relationship between the discourse within the series and real social conditions in society. A qualitative method was applied, with data collected through documentation of scenes across six episodes of the series and supported by literature review. This study finds that Ratu-Ratu Queens constructs three interrelated dominant discourses. First, the deconstruction of the American Dream, in which the series juxtaposes the collective imagination of America as a land of opportunity against the harsh realities of diaspora life, including economic hardship, undocumented status, and identity crisis. Second, diaspora vulnerability, which portrays the precarious position of diaspora women as shaped by legal uncertainty, the loss of primary support, and moral pressure from family in their home country. Third, solidarity as found family, wherein the relationships among characters evolve into a new form of kinship grounded in shared struggle and collective resilience. The social cognitions of director Lucky Kuswandi and producer Muhammad Zaidy further shape this representation through mental models rooted in lived experience and a commitment to centering middle-aged diaspora women in Indonesian cinema. All three discourses are shown to have empirical grounding in the documented realities of the Indonesian diaspora community in America. Overall, the series is constructed as a critical counter-narrative to the romanticization of life abroad.
