Abstract
Violence against women is a global and structural issue. In Indonesia, gender-based violence reached its highest level in a decade in 2025. Online news media play a significant role in shaping public understanding of such violence. This study examines how two of Indonesia’s top three most visited online news portals, Kompas.com and Tribunnews.com, framed the machete attack on a female student at UIN Suska Riau, a case classified by Komnas Perempuan as gender based violence. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using Pan and Kosicki’s framing analysis model. A total of nineteen news articles (twelve from Tribunnews.com and seven from Kompas.com) were analyzed through four framing structures: syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical. The findings show that Kompas.com framed the violence as an issue requiring institutional responsibility and law enforcement, while simultaneously reducing the violence to a consequence of the perpetrator’s psychological condition. In contrast, Tribunnews.com framed the case sensationally as a crime of passion, portraying the violence as an uncontrollable emotional outburst triggered by the victim’s attitudes or behavior, thereby reproducing victim blaming as a socially constructed tendency to blame victims. Neither media outlet fully reflected gender-sensitive journalism. The political economy of the media operated differently in each outlet according to their respective market segmentation: Tribunnews.com explicitly blamed the victim, whereas Kompas.com did so more subtly by humanizing the perpetrator. This study recommends strengthening media literacy and implementing the gender and human rights based reporting guidelines launched by Komnas Perempuan at the end of 2025.
