Abstract

This study is motivated by the floods and landslides that struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra beginning November 25, 2025, claiming more than a thousand lives and drawing intensive coverage from national online media. This study aims to examine how Detik.com and Tempo.co framed their news coverage of the government's handling and response to the Sumatra flood disaster during the period of November 25 to December 31, 2025. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using Robert N. Entman's framing analysis model, which encompasses four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendation. The research corpus consists of 14 news articles selected through purposive sampling and organized into seven thematic categories of disaster management. The findings reveal significant framing differences between the two media outlets. Detik.com consistently framed the government as a responsive and successful actor, relying predominantly on official government sources, while Tempo.co framed the government's response critically by highlighting policy weaknesses and drawing on a more diverse range of sources. These differences reflect two distinct journalistic orientations, whereby Detik.com tends toward action-centered reporting of government activities, whereas Tempo.co leans toward accountability-driven and policy-evaluative reporting.
