Abstract

Marriage in Madurese society is often seen as a social measure that influences how unmarried adult women are viewed by their surroundings. Women who remain unmarried in adulthood often face questions about marriage, age-related comments, comparisons with married peers, and labels such as ta’ pajuh lakeh and peraben towah. This study aims to understand the communication strategies used by unmarried adult women in Desa Labuhan, Madura, in negotiating social pressure related to marriage. This research uses a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method. Data were obtained through participant observation and in-depth interviews with unmarried adult women living in Desa Labuhan. The analysis uses the concept of communication strategy and Face Negotiation Theory. The results show that the informants used three communication strategies: avoiding discussions about marriage as a form of avoiding facework, affirming life choices and personal boundaries as a form of dominating facework, and maintaining social relationships through jokes, prayers, and gentle responses as a form of integrating facework. These findings show that unmarried adult women are not passive, but negotiate social pressure through communication adjusted to the situation, interlocutor, and cultural context.
