Abstract
ABSTRACT Composite materials are widely utilized in engineering applications due to their superior properties, including high strength, low weight, and excellent corrosion resistance. Among these, forged carbon composites, which consist of randomly oriented short carbon fibers embedded in an epoxy resin matrix, have emerged as a promising material. This material demonstrates significant potential for impact-resistant applications, particularly in the automotive industry and safety equipment. This study aims to investigate the effects of variations in carbon forged–epoxy composition and mixing speed on the impact toughness and delamination behavior of forged carbon–epoxy composites. An experimental approach was employed, in which composite specimens were fabricated using the vacuum resin infusion method. The material compositions were varied at 50:50, 60:40, and 80:20 (carbon forged to epoxy resin ratios), while the mixing speeds were set at 200, 400, and 600 RPM. Impact toughness was evaluated using the Izod method in accordance with ASTM D4812 standards, while delamination behavior was analyzed through macro-scale observations of the fracture surfaces following impact testing. The results indicate that material composition significantly influences the impact toughness of the composite, with the 50:50 composition yielding the highest impact toughness value of 74,9 J/m². This is attributed to a more balanced distribution between the matrix and reinforcement, resulting in improved interfacial bonding. In addition, a mixing speed of 200 RPM produced higher impact toughness compared to higher mixing speeds. Morphological analysis revealed the presence of delamination, fiber pull-out, and matrix cracking on the fracture surfaces, indicating that multiple failure mechanisms contribute to the overall fracture behavior of the composite. Keywords: Carbon forged, epoxy composite, impact toughness, delamination, mixing speed
