Abstract

This research was motivated by the Tuku Tumbler case, which became a topic of public discussion on various social media platforms. Interestingly, netizens tended to respond negatively to the perpetrators, resulting in real-life consequences such as job losses. The case subsequently garnered widespread attention in online media and was linked to the phenomenon of digital vigilantism. Therefore, this research focuses on examining the phenomenon of digital vigilantism by analyzing the digital vigilantism practices carried out by netizens in the Tuku Tumbler case on Threads. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach using Christine Hine's virtual ethnography method. Data were collected through observation and supported by a literature review. The analysis refers to Trottier's concept of digital vigilantism and is supported by Henry Jenkins' Participatory Culture theory. The results show that the digital vigilantism practices carried out by netizens in the Tuku Tumbler case on Threads included naming, shaming, online harassment, doxing, submitting petitions or reporting the target to their workplace to request their dismissal, and proposing a boycott of PT KAI (Indonesian Railway Company) to prevent them from using public train transportation. The target is not limited to the main perpetrator, but extends to her husband and other parties such as KAI staff. This practice is manifested through various forms of digital expression, both verbal and nonverbal, as a form of netizen cooperation to deter the target, as a social sanction, social pressure, to uphold justice, and to damage the target's reputation. The repost and share features also strengthen the dissemination of information and increase netizen participation in digital vigilantism practices. Netizen participation through this practice has been shown to have significant social and economic impacts on the targeted parties.
