Abstract
The creation of artwork is based on the artist's personal expression, reflecting their emotions and life experiences, in line with Leo Tolstoy's view that art is an expression of feelings that can be felt by others. Art is seen as a medium for self-expression, creativity, and reflection of personality, both for artists and society. In the context of a metropolitan city like Surabaya, modernization brings challenges to the existence of traditional arts and culture, where local art is often marginalized by more attractive modern culture. However, art remains a crucial part of cultural strategies to support the potential of the creative economy, as evidenced by 2018 Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data, which recorded 141,438 creative economy actors in Surabaya, with the craft subsector as the third largest contributor. Art galleries play a strategic role in supporting the development of the arts, serving as exhibition spaces, educational venues, and social spaces. However, Surabaya still lacks adequate arts facilities to meet the needs of the local arts community and artists. Using a contemporary architectural approach, the design of art galleries is expected to create dynamic, flexible, and expressive multifunctional spaces, reflecting the city's unique identity and supporting various arts activities and community interactions. This approach also allows for the creation of an environment that supports creativity, the economy, and art appreciation, while also being a means to promote Surabaya's culture to the international world.
