Abstract

Food-industry sludge contains high levels Of organic matter that can potentially be valorized as a resource, yet it generates Odor problems due to ammonia (NH) and hydrogen sulfide (Has) emissions produced by anaerobic decomposition. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness Of natural adsorbents (zeolite, rice husk, and calcium carbonate from shellfish shells) in deodorizing food-industry sludge, to determine the best treatment, and to assess the feasibility Of the deodorized sludge as a growth substrate for Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae. The experiment was conducted in a batch system with single (1:3) and combined (1 : 1 : 3) adsorbent ratios and contact times Of 12, 24, and 48 hours, after which the best-performing sludge was tested as a BSF larval growth medium for 14 days. The results showed that adsorbent type had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on NH3 reduction, while both adsorbent type and contact time had a highly significant effect (p < O. 01) on HAS reduction. The calcium carbonate-rice husk combination 1 : 1 was the best treatment for AIH3 removal with an average efficiency Of 82.1 while single rice husk (SP:SL 1 was the best treatment for HaS removal with an average efficiency of 96.3%. The (1 :3) medium produced the best BSF larval growth performance, with a survival rate Of 94.0%, far exceeding the untreated control at only 42.7%. These findings indicate that natural-adsorbent- based deodorization effectively reduces Odor compound concentrations while improving the biological feasibility Of food-industry sludge as a growth substrate for RSF larvae.
