Abstract
The Islamic Center of Kediri City is designed as a religious, educational, and social facility that accommodates various community activities within an integrated complex. This design is motivated by the need for a representative place of worship as well as comfortable communal spaces to support Islamic activities in an urban environment. The primary objective of the project is to create an Islamic Center that is functional, iconic, and capable of providing thermal comfort through the application of tropical architectural principles. The design employs a pragmatic approach, emphasizing practical, functional, and context-responsive solutions that address actual user needs and site conditions. Tropical architectural strategies are implemented through building orientation, cross ventilation, large openings, Islamic-patterned shading devices, and vegetation to improve the site's microclimate. The design outcome demonstrates that the Islamic Center complex utilizes natural ventilation through pitched roofs and a fountain area as passive cooling elements. Supporting facilities, including the library, multipurpose hall, management office, and cafeteria, are organized according to the intensity of user activities, with circulation systems that are clear and easy to understand. Each building mass maintains a tropical architectural character through the use of natural lighting, generous openings, and climate-responsive materials. Overall, the proposed design creates an Islamic Center that not only fulfills its religious, educational, and social functions but also provides a comfortable, open, and sustainable environment that meets the needs of the urban community in the tropical climate of Kediri City.
