Abstract
The mangrove ecosystem in Bangkalan Regency has significant potential as a conservation, educational, and nature-based tourism area. However, its development has not been fully optimized due to the limited availability of supporting facilities and the absence of a design approach that effectively integrates environmental conservation with sustainable tourism needs. Therefore, the design of the Mangrove Ecotourism Area in Bangkalan aims to create a tourism destination that supports ecosystem conservation while providing educational, recreational, and economic benefits for the local community. This design employs the Issue-Based Programming method combined with an Adaptive Architecture approach to respond to the dynamic characteristics of the coastal environment. The design process includes issue identification, site condition analysis, user needs assessment, precedent studies, and the development of design concepts that are adapted to the characteristics of the mangrove ecosystem. The proposed design results in an ecotourism area featuring a dispersed massing arrangement, a floating structural system that responds to site conditions, the use of environmentally friendly materials, and spaces that facilitate conservation, education, recreation, and community empowerment activities. The Adaptive Architecture approach is implemented to create a tourism area that harmonizes with the natural environment, minimizes impacts on the mangrove ecosystem, and remains adaptable to future environmental changes. Accordingly, this design is expected to serve as a sustainable model for mangrove ecotourism development while contributing to the conservation and preservation of coastal ecosystems.
