Abstract
Gresik Regency is known as one of the centers of Islamic education in East Java, with a strong character as a *kota santri* (city of Islamic students). However, the development of Islamic boarding school institutions that integrate formal senior secondary education with a sustainable architectural approach remains limited. On the other hand, the increasing demand for high school/Islamic senior high school (SMA/MA) level education and concerns regarding environmental degradation necessitate the presence of educational facilities that are not only academically and spiritually excellent but also responsive to environmental conservation. This final project aims to design an Islamic Boarding School in Gresik using a sustainable architectural approach, capable of supporting an integrated 24-hour boarding education system while contributing to environmental preservation. The design is conducted through a contextual method employing a modern tropical architectural style, alongside the application of sustainable architectural principles referring to the concept of sustainable development (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987) and (Guy & Farmer, 2001). The theme adopted for this design is "Learning Environment with Harmony of Nature and Islamic Character." This theme signifies a learning environment that creates a balance between the principles of nature conservation and the formation of Islamic character. Thus, this design is expected to serve as a model for modern Islamic education development in Gresik that is aligned with the principles of sustainability and supports the improvement of the quality of Islamic human resources.
