Abstract
Surabaya, as the largest educational hub in Eastern Indonesia, is experiencing a significant increase in its student population. This phenomenon has triggered a high demand for temporary housing. However, limited urban land forces students to reside in housing with low environmental quality, minimal natural lighting, and a lack of social spaces, which potentially increases academic stress and reduces productivity. Therefore, a Biophilic Architecture approach is required to create a restorative and healthy vertical housing environment. The primary objective of this design is to present a residential environment that restores the human connection with nature to support the physical and psychological well-being of students. The design method utilizes a Pattern-Based Framework referencing the 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design (Browning et al., 2014). The concept of "Nature Student Living" is applied through massing orientation, maximizing natural lighting, and utilizing open corridors to maximize cross-ventilation. The design results feature two separate building masses to ensure privacy and air circulation, equipped with academic supporting facilities such as co-working spaces and a library, as well as recreational areas including an artificial forest and a swimming pool. The application of biophilic elements, such as a visual connection with nature, biomorphic forms in the interior, and the integration of vegetation on the facade, is expected to reduce stress levels, enhance cognitive function, and provide a healthy space for social interaction among students amidst the urban density of Surabaya.
