Abstract
The interior redesign of UPT Perpustakaan Proklamator Bung Karno is driven by the disparity between its strategic role as a hub for preserving collective memory and modern literacy, and its existing conditions. These conditions suffer from several issues wayfinding problems that cause visitor disorientation, acoustic conflicts due to a lack of clear zoning between group and individual activities, and a stiff atmosphere that fails to embody an inclusive "Third Place" concept. These challenges are addressed through the macro concept of "The Common Learner," which aims to create an inclusive and democratic space that facilitates various learning styles and social interactions, supported by a regionalist approach and historical narratives. The circulation flow is designed linearly in the Memorabilia area to guide visitors through a coherent historical sequence, and then transitions to an axial circulation pattern in the main corridor, which serves as the backbone for efficiently separating the noisy and quiet zones. The space’s comfort system is technically regulated: Lighting complies with SNI 6197:2020, with an intensity of 300-500 lux (cool white) for reading areas and 150-200 lux (warm white) for exhibition areas to ensure visual comfort and the conservation of the collection; while acoustic management is implemented through the use of sound-absorbing materials (absorbers) such as acoustic wall panels, ceiling baffles, and carpeting in the quiet zones, supplemented by the use of bookshelves as natural sound barriers. Elements of Regionalist Aesthetics are reinforced through the selection of local materials such as exposed brick (terracotta), teak wood, and terrazzo flooring, combined with modern technology to create a space with a distinctive character that remains functional. This redesign transforms UPT Perpustakaan Proklamator Bung Karno from a mere repository of books into a vibrant, educational, and inspiring public space, with the hope of increasing visitor engagement and strengthening the library’s image as a pillar of national literacy.
