Abstract
The interior design of the Lokananta Bloc Music Gallery in Surakarta was inspired by the gap in historical narratives and the loss of local identity The Spirit of Java following its physical revitalization (2022-2023). The existing interior design was deemed too contemporary and thus failed to optimally represent traditional music collections such as the Gamelan Kyai Sri Kuncoro Mulyo to the younger generation (ages 15-30). Therefore, this study aims to design an interior concept that integrates Surakarta’s local cultural heritage with analog music archives through an approach combining spatial psychology and immersive design to spark young people’s interest in appreciating the history of Indonesian music. To address this issue, this design employs the Design Thinking method (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test) combined with a qualitative phenomenological approach to explore visitors’ emotional connections. Additionally, a data-driven empirical analysis (user-centered design) was conducted using thematic analysis and coding methods on 2,761 Google Maps reviews posted after the revitalization. This step aimed to accurately identify user needs regarding the comfort of the atmosphere, spatial layout, lighting quality, visual aesthetics, and interactive facilities. Theoretically, this design draws on Ching’s principles of spatial organization, the hybridization of tradition and modernity through the ATUMICS method, the cultural heritage regulations set forth in Government Regulation No. 66/2015, and the principles of multisensory immersive design. Observations revealed existing spatial shortcomings, including stuffy circulation, flat lighting, and a lack of sensory stimulation. As a benchmark, a comparative study was conducted on the visual technology of Tokyo Node (Japan), the meditative acoustics of The Audeum (South Korea), and the storytelling-based wireless audio system at the Musical Instrument Museum (U.S.).The synthesis of this study resulted in a Macro Concept featuring an immersive interior design in the Retro Pop Art style (aesthetics of the 1950s–1970s) under the theme “Resonance,” which abstracts sound waves (sine waves) into wall and ceiling elements. The Micro Concept is expressed through the color palette of the original Lokananta logo (Terracotta, Mustard Yellow, Off-White, and Warm Wood Tone) as well as local materials such as woven rattan as a natural acoustic diffuser, restored tiles, and brass ornaments characteristic of the Keraton. The circulation system was designed to combine a clockwise linear-sequential pattern with radial circulation within the space to allow for free sensory exploration. Based on the weighting method, Alternative Layout 2 was selected with the highest score of 4.70 due to its superior ability to harmonize circulation and zoning, which was subsequently implemented across three core areas. The West Wing was developed as a dramatic reception area and a tiered library; the North Side became the “historical heart,” featuring the Discography Room with a listening booth adorned with a deconstructed Parang motif and the Gamelan Room with a Javanese braided ceiling; while the East Side became the pinnacle of immersion, presenting a digital recording simulator, a circular Bengawan Solo installation, and culminating in the Proclamation Room (sound dome) with sacred panoramic projections. The success of this hybridization is underscored by functional custom products such as the knock-down Kawung Stool and aesthetic wall lamps made from repurposed vinyl records featuring the Kawung motif.
