Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a biomaterial widely used as a bone implant material due to its chemical composition being similar to that of the mineral component of natural bone. However, the relatively brittle nature of hydroxyapatite necessitates the incorporation of organic materials, such as collagen, to improve its mechanical properties and better mimic the structure of natural bone. This study investigated the synthesis of hydroxyapatite–collagen composites using the sol–gel method to evaluate the effects of collagen mass variation and sintering time on the characteristics of the synthesized material. The synthesis process employed CaO as the calcium source and H₃PO₄ as the phosphate source, with collagen mass variations ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 g and sintering times of 4–6 h at a temperature of 1100°C. Characterization using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) showed that the Ca/P ratio of the synthesized hydroxyapatite ranged from 1.54 to 1.67, with the optimum condition achieved at the addition of 1 g of collagen and a sintering time of 6 h, resulting in a Ca/P ratio of 1.6702, which is close to the stoichiometric value of hydroxyapatite (1.67). Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed the presence of characteristic functional groups of hydroxyapatite, including phosphate (PO₄³⁻) absorption bands at approximately 560–600 cm⁻¹ and 1000–1100 cm⁻¹, as well as hydroxyl (OH⁻) groups at around 3570 cm⁻¹. In addition, amide groups originating from collagen were detected, indicating the successful formation of the hydroxyapatite–collagen composite. Morphological analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed an average particle size of approximately 0.59 μm, a porosity of about 37%, and agglomerated particles with a heterogeneous size distribution.
