Abstract

Instagram has become one of the digital spaces used by mothers to access information about parenting, child health, and complementary feeding. This study aimed to examine mothers’ reception of complementary feeding educational messages on the Instagram account @drtanshotyen. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach with Stuart Hall’s reception theory as the analytical framework. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight mothers who had children aged 6-24 months, actively used Instagram, and had accessed complementary feeding educational content from @drtanshotyen. This study also involved observations of nine Instagram contents consisting of feed posts, reels, and story highlights. The findings showed that mothers interpreted dr. Tan Shot Yen’s educational messages as an encouragement to prioritize real food, reduce ultraprocessed food (UPF), pay attention to animal protein intake, apply oral-motor stimulation, and evaluate the causes of food refusal in children. In terms of reception position, three informants were categorized in the dominant-hegemonic position, five informants were categorized in the negotiated position, and no informant was found to be fully in the oppositional position. This study concluded that mothers’ reception of complementary feeding educational messages did not occur passively. Instead, it was shaped by parenting experiences, children’s conditions, work responsibilities, family support, economic considerations, and socio-cultural practices. Keywords: reception analysis, Instagram, mothers, complementary feeding, educational messages
