Abstract
Food waste in Indonesia remains a critical concern, particularly among food businesses that may generate surplus food. Digital applications can connect such businesses with consumers to distribute surplus food that is still fit for consumption, yet existing applications face user experience obstacles such as price transparency, product information clarity, ease of finding partners, and trust in food quality. This thesis aimed to design the user experience of a surplus food application named "Eco Food" using the Design Thinking method, which comprises five stages: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Data were collected through observations and interviews with ten respondents: five consumers and five food businesses. The empathize and define stages mapped user needs, the ideate stage produced solution concepts and information architecture, and the prototype stage produced wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, and a design system for the consumer, food business, and admin sides. Evaluation used two iterations covering usability testing, the System Usability Scale (SUS), and heuristic evaluation. The first iteration obtained SUS scores of 78 for consumers and 86.5 for food businesses. After a redesign based on heuristic evaluation findings on the Error Prevention and Flexibility and Efficiency of Use principles, the second iteration increased effectiveness to 97.14% for consumers and 99.09% for food businesses, efficiency to 96.88% and 99.22%, and final SUS scores to 92,5 and 89.5, both in the Excellent category. Thus, the Design Thinking method proved effective in producing an intuitive, efficient UI/UX design for the Eco Food application that matches user needs.
