Abstract
Laundry wastewater contains high concentrations of surfactants, phosphates, and chemical oxygen demand (COD), which are difficult to remove using conventional treatment methods. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a combined adsorption pre-treatment and bipolar electrocoagulation process for reducing pollutant loads in laundry wastewater. The electrocoagulation process was conducted under varying operating conditions, including treatment time, number of electrode plates, and applied voltage, to determine the optimal configuration. The pre-treatment stage employed clay-based adsorbents with variations in clay type, thermal activation temperature, and chemical activation. Key parameters analyzed included surfactants, phosphates, COD, and total suspended solids (TSS). The results indicated that the optimal condition was achieved using kaolin activated thermally at 500°C and chemically with 3 N HCl under slightly acidic conditions, followed by electrocoagulation using five electrode plates at an applied voltage of 25 V. Under these conditions, surfactant removal efficiency reached 98.89%, significantly higher than the 83.94% achieved without pre-treatment. These findings demonstrate that the integration of adsorption and bipolar electrocoagulation is an effective approach for enhancing the treatment performance of laundry wastewater. Keywords: Laundry wastewater, bipolar electrocoagulation, adsorption, kaolin, bentonite, surfactants, phosphate.
