Abstract
This study aims to analyze the role of wayfinding in shaping the tourist experience in the European Zone of Surabaya’s Old Town. The central issue explored is how vintage-themed navigational amenities do not merely function technically as wayfinding tools, but rather transform into a medium of cultural communication that influences tourists’ subjective interpretations and emotional experiences in this urban heritage area. The method used in this study is qualitative with a descriptive approach. Data collection was conducted in stages through field observations, documentation, and in-depth interviews based on purposive sampling of nine tourist informants who actively interacted with the wayfinding system at the research site. The data analysis technique is based on Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and the drawing of conclusions validated through triangulation. The research results indicate that wayfinding in the European Zone of Surabaya’s Old Town plays a multidimensional role encompassing four primary functions: the navigational information function, which prioritizes route legibility; the self-directed navigation function, which guides spatial movement; the visually classical function, which harmonizes with the aesthetics of the cultural heritage site and serves as a subject for photography; as well as the area’s identity function, which defines the boundaries of the historic zone. The implications of this study offer a new perspective in tourism research regarding the interaction between physical amenities and the dimensions of customer experience (immersion, participation, fun, surprise). This study provides a theoretical contribution to academics and offers practical recommendations for destination managers and the Surabaya City Government in formulating strategies for a sustainable heritage tourism environment.
