Abstract

Cocoa is a strategic plantation commodity in Indonesia; however, the sustainability of its farming system faces various challenges from economic, ecological, social, institutional, and technological aspects. This study aims to analyze the sustainability status of cocoa farming and to identify the sensitive attributes that influence it in Sumbermanjing Wetan District, Malang Regency. The research was conducted from February–April 2026 using the Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) method with the Rap-Cocoa approach. Data were collected from 90 cocoa farmers through purposive sampling techniques and supported by secondary data. The analysis was carried out on five sustainability dimensions. The results showed that the sustainability value of the economic dimension was 76.24 (sustainable), ecology 54.29, social 65.29, and institutional 55.79 (moderately sustainable), and technology 46.42 (less sustainable). Overall, the sustainability value was 57.33, vii which falls into the moderately sustainable category. A total of 18 out of 30 attributes were identified as sensitive attributes influencing the sustainability of cocoa farming in Sumbermanjing Wetan District. The conclusion of this study indicates that cocoa farming is still feasible to be developed, however, further improvement efforts are required to achieve a more optimal level of sustainability. Keywords: Sustainability index; cocoa farming; MDS Rapfish; Rap-Cocoa
