Abstract

Sugarcane Saccharum officinarum L.) is a plantation commodity that plays an important role in meeting the need for raw materials for sugar. The increasing demand for sugar encourages the need for efforts to increase production, one of which is through the use of planting materials that have good growth quality. This study was conducted to examine the effect of bud position and bud set size on the initial growth of sugarcane seedlings of the PS 862 variety. The experiment was arranged using a completely randomized design (RAL) factorial pattern consisting of two factors, namely the position of the bud at the base, middle, and top of the stem and the size of the bud set 6 cm, 8 cm, and 10 cm. The results showed that the combination of both treatments had an effect on stem diameter at the age of 5 weeks after planting (WAP). The position of the bud affected the percentage of seedling growth, number of shoots, and leaf area, while differences in bud set size didn't have a significant effect on seedling growth.
