Abstract
Saline soil is characterized by a high concentration of soluble salts, such as NaCl, Na₂CO₃, and Na₂SO₄, which adversely affect plant growth and development. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is the predominant salt present in saline soils. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of biochar and silica amendments on reducing soil salinity and improving nitrogen availability in saline soil. The experiment was arranged in a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors. The first factor was rice husk biochar consisting of three levels: B0 (control), B1 (15 t ha⁻¹), and B2 (30 t ha⁻¹). The second factor was silica consisting of three levels: S0 (control), S1 (0.5 t ha⁻¹), and S2 (1.5 t ha⁻¹).The results showed that the application of biochar and silica amendments improved saline soil conditions by reducing soil electrical conductivity (EC), indicating a decrease in salinity and soluble sodium content. The B2S2 treatment combination was the most effective in reducing soil salinity, as indicated by the lowest EC value. In addition, the B2S2 treatment, consisting of rice husk biochar at 30 t ha⁻¹ and silica at 1.5 t ha⁻¹, was the most effective treatment in enhancing soil nitrogen availability, as evidenced by the highest ammonium (NH₄⁺) and nitrate (NO₃⁻) concentrations, reaching 320.77 ppm and 263.68 ppm, respectively, after four weeks of incubation. These findings indicate that the combined application of biochar and silica enhanced nitrogen mineralization and transformation processes, thereby increasing nitrogen availability in saline soil. Keywords: saline soil, available nitrogen in soil, biochar and silica
