Abstract
The butterfly pea plant (Clitoria ternatea L.) has potential as an ornamental, medicinal, and functional food plant; however, its genetic diversity remains limited. Mutation induction using ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) is one approach to increase the plant’s genetic diversity. This study aimed to analyze the effects of various EMS concentrations on the growth and flowering of two butterfly pea genotypes. The study employed a factorial Randomized Block Design consisting of two genotypes and four EMS concentration levels of EMS (0; 0.05; 0.075; and 0.10%) with three replications. The observed parametersincluded germination rate, leaf area, time to flowering, and flower corolla diameter. The results showed that an increase in EMS concentration tended to reduce germination rate and plant viability.Genotype had a significant effect on leaf area, while EMS concentration had a significant effect on flowering time. Flower corolla diameter was not affected by either genotype or EMS concentration. The results indicate that the response of Clitoria ternatea to EMS is more pronounced in flowering traits than in vegetative growth traits, thus holding potential for use in Clitoria ternatea mutation breeding programs. Keywords: Clitoria ternatea, ethyl methanesulfonate, flowering, growth, mutation breeding.
