Abstract

Edible film is a thin layer that functions as a packaging or food coatings that can be eaten together with other products packed. Corn starch is used as a basic material in the manufacture of edible films. Carrageenan was chosen as a supporting material which is considered to improve quality from edible films because carrageenan contains a gel that can increase strength of edible films. However, it needs to be combined with a plasticizer to make edible films more elastic and less brittle, in this study glycerol plasticizer is used. This study aims to obtain variations in the addition of glycerol and optimal carrageenan and its effect on the quality of edible films generated. The research is divided into two stages where the first stage is making carrageenan by extracting seaweed (Eucheuma cottonii). At stage The second is the manufacture of edible films with the addition of carrageenan (3 g, 6 g, 9 g, 12 g, 15 g) and glycerol (1 ml, 2 ml, 3 ml, 4 ml, 5 ml) and the method used namely solution casting. From the results of the study, it was found that the composition of the edible film variation was the best according to the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), namely the 12 gram carrageenan variant: glycerol 2 ml, with a thickness value of 0.13 mm, a tensile strength value of 6.352 Mpa, the elongation value is 27.40 %, and the Young's modulus is 23,18248 Mpa
