Abstract

Diverse land uses can affect the physical and chemical characteristics of soil, which in turn impact agricultural yields. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of land use variations on soil physical and chemical characteristics and to identify the most important land use characteristics in Labang Village, Labang District, Bangkalan Regency. This study used a survey method and purposive sampling across three land use categories: rice fields, dry land, and mixed gardens. Each land use category was delimited by four sampling points at two soil depths, resulting in a total of 24 soil samples. Parameters analyzed included soil physical properties such as texture, air content, bulk density, and specific gravity, as well as soil chemical properties such as pH, organic carbon, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and available nitrogen content. The data obtained were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) based on a Randomized Block Design (RBD) followed by Duncan's test. The study showed that land use has a significant impact on various soil physical and chemical characteristics. The pH, nitrogen availability, organic C, clay proportion, and silt proportion showed significant differences in each type of land use, while the bulk density and sand proportion did not show significant differences. Dry land had the highest pH, nitrogen, and organic C values, while rice fields had the highest clay proportion. The use of mixed garden land showed the most superior soil quality compared to other types of land use, as seen from the higher content of organic C, nitrogen, and CEC as well as better soil physical conditions, with lower bulk density, higher water content, and more stable soil texture. Therefore, the mixed garden system is considered more efficient in maintaining soil quality and supporting plant growth. Keywords: Land Use, Soil Physical Properties, Soil Chemical Properties
