Abstract
Brassicaceae crops experience reduced productivity due to infestations of Plutella xylostella and Crocidolomia pavonana, which can cause yield losses of up to 90% and 87.5%, respectively. One environmentally friendly alternative for pest control is the use of Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV) from the Baculoviridae family. NPV is known to effectively increase insect larval mortality and is relatively safe for non-target organisms due to its high host specificity. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Spodoptera litura Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (Sl-NPV) against different larval instars of P. xylostella and C. pavonana at several virus concentrations and to analyze its effects on larval mortality and lethal time. The results showed that Sl-NPV significantly affected larval mortality; however, no interaction was observed between species and instar factors and virus concentration. Susceptibility was influenced by the developmental stage, with second-instar larvae exhibiting higher susceptibility than older instars. The highest mortality was observed in second-instar C. pavonana larvae (100.00%), while the lowest mortality occurred in fourth-instar P. xylostella larvae (5.00%) at 168 hours after inoculation. A concentration of 2.2 × 10⁹ PIB/mL resulted in higher mortality than 3.9 × 10⁸ PIB/mL at 72–144 hours after inoculation. The lowest LT₅₀ value, 82 hours, was obtained in second-instar C. pavonana larvae treated with the highest virus concentration. Keywords: Spodoptera litura Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (Sl-NPV), Plutella xylostella, Crocidolomia pavonana, larval mortality, LT₅₀, biological control.
