Abstract
The development of automotive culture in urban areas is no longer limited to transportation, but has transformed into a massive ecosystem of creative economy and community lifestyle. As a metropolitan city, Surabaya has very high potential and enthusiasm for organizing automotive exhibitions and vehicle modification events. Unfortunately, this rapid development has not yet been supported by the availability of adequate integrated facilities. Various activities such as creative appreciation, mechanical knowledge sharing, and routine community interactions are often forced to utilize public spaces. On the other hand, the absence of a dedicated spare parts retail center also hinders the productivity of local modifiers. Based on this urgency, this design aims to present an Automotive Center as an integrated space that accommodates exhibition activities, mechanical education, commercial retail, and communal spaces to support the consolidation of the automotive ecosystem in Surabaya. This design applies the Intangible Metaphor method with a Contemporary Architecture approach under the theme “Motion in Urban Connectivity.” The design concept transforms the principles of vehicle aerodynamics, particularly The Streamline style, into a dynamic building mass composition. The design outcome manifests motion as the main visual identity, expressed through flowing dynamic forms, the use of modern materials, maximum transparency in openings, and integrated circulation patterns. The Automotive Center is expected to become an inclusive public space as well as a new landmark that strengthens Surabaya’s image as a progressive automotive city.
