Abstract
Batam City is one of the largest industrial cities in the Riau Islands Province, Indonesia. Its geographical condition as an archipelagic city consisting of numerous islands has endowed Batam with abundant coastal natural resources and a tropical climate influenced by the surrounding marine environment. Batam’s strategic location along international trade routes has positioned it as the third-largest gateway for international tourists entering Indonesia. The significant number of tourists visiting Batam presents substantial opportunities for the development of the local tourism sector. To support tourism activities, adequate accommodations are required to meet the needs of visitors. A beach resort, as a form of hospitality accommodation, is one of the essential facilities needed to provide temporary lodging for tourists in Batam. The selection of a beach resort as the project focus is also based on Batam’s rich coastal resources and tourism potential. To create an accommodation facility capable of attracting visitors, it is necessary to design a beach resort that is both functional and aesthetically appealing. In addition, consideration must be given to the local tropical climate, which significantly influences the comfort level of building users. Therefore, a Tropical Architecture approach is applied in this design. This approach emphasizes architectural responses to local climatic conditions and seeks to address climate-related challenges through appropriate design strategies. By implementing the principles of Tropical Architecture, the proposed beach resort is expected to provide a high level of thermal comfort while enhancing its attractiveness as a destination for tourists.
