Abstract
Diammonium phosphate (DAP) is a high-analysis fertilizer containing 18% nitrogen and 46% phosphorus pentoxide (P₂O₅), widely used to improve agricultural productivity. This study presents the pre-design of a diammonium phosphate plant with a production capacity of 40,000 tons per year, located in the JIIPE Industrial Estate, Manyar District, Gresik Regency, East Java, operating 24 hours per day for 330 days per year. The plant employs the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) process using ammonia sourced from PT. Petrokimia Gresik and phosphoric acid as raw materials. In this process, ammonia is first vaporized using an expander and subsequently heated to 120°C before entering a Bubble Mixed Flow Reactor, where it reacts with phosphoric acid to produce monoammonium phosphate (MAP). The MAP product is then fed into an Ammoniator-Granulator operating at 120°C and atmospheric pressure, where further ammoniation converts MAP into diammonium phosphate (DAP) granules. The granular product is subsequently dried in a rotary dryer to reduce moisture content, cooled in a rotary cooler to 30°C, and classified by a screener into oversize, on-size, and undersize fractions. Oversize particles are reduced using a hammer mill, undersize particles are recycled to the Ammoniator-Granulator, and on-size particles are conveyed to storage silos as the final product. The TVA process was selected over alternative methods such as the Blunger-Dorr Oliver, Phillips, and Nissan Spray Tower processes due to its lower energy consumption, simpler equipment requirements, and suitability for wet-process phosphoric acid. Economic analysis indicates that the plant is technically and economically feasible, supported by favorable values of return on investment (ROI), payback period (PBP), internal rate of return (IRR), and break-even point (BEP), confirming the viability of this plant design to meet the growing national demand for DAP fertilizer in Indonesia..
