Abstract

Commercially marketed sodium bicarbonate is generally available in the form of solid powder with a purity above 99%. Sodium bicarbonate is widely used in various industries, such as a leavening agent in baking powder, a component in fire extinguisher powder, raw material for soap and deodorant production, and in the pharmaceutical industry as an ingredient in medicinal products. Currently, Indonesia still imports sodium bicarbonate from other countries to fulfill domestic demand. In the production of sodium bicarbonate, this plant uses the pure sodium bicarbonate process with sodium carbonate, carbon dioxide, and calcium carbonate as raw materials. Dissolved sodium carbonate is contacted with carbon dioxide gas inside an agitated bubble crystallizer reactor operating at 75°C and 1 atm. Under these conditions, the reaction conversion can reach 90%. From both technical and economic perspectives, the sodium bicarbonate plant is considered feasible to be established, with an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 29.63%, a Pay Back Period (PBP) of 2 years and 7.5 months, and a Break Even Point (BEP) of 28.64%.
