Abstract

PT Petrokimia Gresik is one of the largest fertilizer and chemical companies in Indonesia, located in Gresik, East Java. Through its IB Department, the company focuses on the production of ammonia, one of the main raw materials in the fertilizer industry. Initially, the ammonia plant at PT Petrokimia Gresik operated solely to support the internal production needs of urea fertilizer. However, as the industry developed, processing capacity and technology were continuously improved, enabling ammonia to be used not only for internal needs but also for marketing to various other chemical industry sectors. The ammonia production process in the IB Department is supported by a utility unit that includes air demineralization, boilers, cooling systems, nitrogen and hydrogen supply units, and a flare unit for exhaust gas handling. The main raw materials used are natural gas and air, which undergo stages of reforming, extraction, synthesis, and compression, producing high-purity ammonia. To support smooth production, PT Petrokimia Gresik also implements a waste management system that handles liquid, solid, and gaseous waste to meet environmental standards. In addition, an integrated laboratory is provided to control the quality of raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products, ensuring that the ammonia produced consistently meets established quality specifications.
