Abstract

Coal fly ash is a solid waste product of coal combustion in steam-fired power plants that contains various metals, especially aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe), which have the potential to be used as coagulants in wastewater treatment. However, these metals are still bound in the fly ash's mineral matrix, requiring an effective extraction process. This study aims to extract metals from fly ash using a stirred Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE) method with hydrochloric acid (HCl) as a solvent and to evaluate its use as a coagulant in textile wastewater treatment. The extraction process was conducted using the one factor at a time (OFFAT) approach, with a material-to-solvent ratio of 1:5 at 300 W microwave power. The stirring speeds varied (200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 rpm), extraction times (20, 35, 50, 65, and 80 minutes), and HCl concentrations (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 M). The extracted products were analyzed using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) to determine the composition of the extracted metals. The results showed that the optimum conditions were obtained at an HCl concentration of 3 M, an extraction time of 35 minutes, and a stirring speed of 600 rpm, with a yield of 85.36%. Characterization showed that fly ash contained 7.340% aluminum and 36.694% iron, with aluminum recovery of 53.4% and iron recovery of 26.10% after extraction. The extracted coagulant, applied to artificial textile wastewater at a dose of 0.075 g in 500 mL, reduced the TSS value from 65.0 ± 2.7 mg/L to 1.00 ± 0.04 mg/L. Meanwhile, in real industrial textile wastewater, the TSS decreased from 81.5 ± 1.8 mg/L to 9.5 ± 1.5 mg/L, thus meeting the established quality standards. Keywords: Hydrochloric acid, extraction, coal fly ash, coagulant, microwave-assisted stirred extraction, metal separation.
