Abstract

This document presents the preliminary design for a hydrogen plant utilizing a coal gasification process with a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year. The facility is planned to begin construction in 2030 in Satimpo District, Bontang City, East Kalimantan. Coal and air are selected as the primary raw materials due to coal's abundant availability in Indonesia, with supplies ensured by major companies such as PT. Kaltim Prima Coal, PT. BUMI, and Adaro. The production process relies on a wet gasification method that includes raw material preparation, coal gasification inside an entrained flow gasifier to form syngas, and gas purification. The reactions in the gasifier operate continuously at a pressure of 20 atm and temperatures ranging from 995°C to 1370°C. The business will be established as a Limited Liability Company (Perseroan Terbatas) utilizing a Line and Staff organizational system, supported by a total workforce of 205 employees. The plant is designed to operate continuously for 330 days a year and 24 hours a day, covering a total land area of 40,200 m². To sustain these operations, the facility's utility requirements include 146,997.96 kg/hour of steam, 12,303.5 kWh of electricity, 582.113 m³/hour of water, and 105,462 L/day of fuel. An economic feasibility analysis was also conducted, assuming a construction period of 2 years and an annual bank interest rate of 8%. The financial projections show a Return on Investment (ROI) of 41.38% before tax and 31.04% after tax. The project's capital is expected to be recovered within a payback period of 3 years and 11 months. Furthermore, the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) is calculated at 24.89%, and the operation is projected to reach its Break-Even Point (BEP) at 39.45%.
