Abstract

This pre-design study presents the establishment of a Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (Bio-CNG) plant utilizing tapioca starch industry wastewater through an anaerobic digestion process with a production capacity of 30,000 tons per year, planned to commence operation in 2029 and located in the Gunung Agung Industrial Area, Terusan Nunyai, Central Lampung. The background of this plant development is based on the high organic content of tapioca wastewater, characterized by elevated COD and BOD values and its significant environmental pollution potential, thereby requiring proper treatment while offering an opportunity for renewable energy production. The production process consists of hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis stages to generate biogas containing 50–60% methane, which is subsequently upgraded using a 30% monoethanolamine (MEA) solution to remove CO₂ and H₂S, and then compressed to 200 bar to produce Bio-CNG with methane content above 92%, comparable to conventional CNG and suitable as a substitute for LPG, as well as for industrial fuel, transportation, and power generation applications. This plant design not only serves as an environmentally friendly and sustainable industrial wastewater treatment solution but also provides economic added value, as indicated by favorable feasibility parameters including a 36% Return on Investment (ROI), 34.8% Internal Rate of Return (IRR), a Payback Period of 2 years and 8 months, and a Break Even Point of 34.3%, demonstrating that the project is economically viable for implementation.
