Abstract
Silica fiber is a composite material based on silicon dioxide (SiO₂) reinforced with cellulose fibers, exhibiting excellent thermal resistance up to 694°C according to ASTM C1728-23, superior mechanical strength, relatively low density (about 1.9–2.2 g/cm³), and high chemical stability, making it suitable for thermal insulation in automotive, aerospace, construction, and environmentally friendly composite reinforcement applications. This study investigates the effect of solution pH (3–7) and waste HVS/boxboard paper weight (8–12 g) on the synthesis and characteristics of silica fiber using the sol-gel method, where paper waste is treated via bleaching with 3% hydrogen peroxide and NaOH at pH 9 and 90°C to extract cellulose fibers, followed by precipitation with 30% sodium silicate, methanol addition to form fibers, and citric acid as a pH controller, with an aging stage of 24 hours and oven drying at 120°C for 4 hours. Characterization was carried out through gravimetric density measurement, functional group analysis by FTIR, and thermal stability analysis using TGA; optimum conditions were obtained at pH 5 with 8 g HVS (density 1.8946 g/ml) and 12 g cardboard (density 2.0228 g/ml), where FTIR confirmed dominant Si–O–Si bands, while TGA showed thermal degradation onset at 292.32°C for cardboard and 288.84°C for HVS—approaching thermal insulator specifications—thus utilizing abundant paper waste in Indonesia (HVS cellulose content 69.74% and cardboard 63.99%) to generate higher economic value and reduce environmental pollution from accumulated paper waste.
