Abstract
Sodium nitrate (NaNO₃) is one of the most important chemicals for various industries and is produced in large quantities. The demand for sodium nitrate (NaNO₃) in Indonesia continues to increase due to its widespread use in many industrial sectors. Sodium nitrate (NaNO₃) is commonly used in explosives, fertilizers, glass manufacturing, charcoal briquettes, and pharmaceuticals. A sodium nitrate plant using soda ash and nitric acid through a neutralization process with a capacity of 50,000 tons/year will be established in the JIIPE Industrial Area, Manyar, Gresik, East Java. The production of sodium nitrate by the neutralization process consists of four main stages: raw material preparation, reaction, concentration, and drying. In the reaction stage, a 53% nitric acid solution is fed into the reactor along with soda ash. Inside the reactor, a neutralization reaction occurs, producing sodium nitrate, water, and CO₂ gas with nearly 100% conversion at an operating temperature of 60°C and a pressure of 1 atm. The concentration process is carried out by evaporating part of the water contained in the sodium nitrate solution at a temperature of 100°C and a pressure of 1 atm. During the crystallization process, not all products can be perfectly crystallized because it depends on the concentration level achieved. The slurry from the crystallizer is then fed into a centrifuge to separate the crystalline solids from the mother liquor. The resulting cake from the centrifuge is conveyed to a rotary dryer for the drying process. Before packaging, the product is first cooled in a cooling conveyor and then sent to the packaging process.
