Abstract
Limited fossil fuel energy and increasing biomass waste are pushing the development of renewable and environmentally friendly alternative fuels. Coconut husks and wood dust are abundant biomass that has potential to be used as raw materials for making charcoal briquettes. This study aims to examine how changes in the composition of materials and the mesh size of charcoal affect the physical properties of briquettes, specifically their compressive strength and burning duration. The research method used was an experiment with different combinations of coconut shell charcoal and wood powder in ratios of 50:50, 60:40, 70:30, 80:20, and 90:10, along with mesh sizes of 50 mesh, 70 mesh, and 100 mesh. The briquettes are made with dimensions of 25 × 25 × 25 mm, using 10% cornstarch as the binder, and are dried at 100 °C for 10 to 12 hours. Testing was done through compression testing and long-term burn testing. The study shows that increasing the proportion of coconut shell charcoal improves the compressive strength and burning duration of the briquettes. A 90:10 mix creates the best physical properties and meets the mechanical strength standards for biomass briquettes (≥0.8 MPa). The two-way ANOVA analysis shows that the composition of coconut shell charcoal has a significant effect on burning time, with a value of 4.91×10^(-14)), while the mesh size does not have a statistically significant effect. This study shows that the composition of raw materials is the main factor in determining the quality of biomass briquettes
