Abstract
Garlic (Allium sativum L.) was a strategic horticultural commodity with high economic value and consumption in Indonesia; however, its productivity remained relatively low. One of the main factors contributing to low garlic yields was suboptimal environmental conditions, particularly photoperiod duration and growing media quality. Efforts to improve production could be achieved through photoperiod manipulation and appropriate growing media composition to support optimal growth and bulb formation. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of photoperiod and growing media composition on the growth and yield of Sangga Sembalun garlic variety. The results showed that the interaction between photoperiod and growing media composition significantly affected early vegetative growth. A 12-hour photoperiod combined with a growing media composition of soil : goat manure : rice husk charcoal (1:1:1) produced the highest plant height at 14 and 21 days after planting (DAP). However, photoperiod treatment did not significantly affect leaf number or all yield parameters from 14 to 63 DAP. Similarly, growing media composition did not significantly influence plant height from 28 to 63 DAP, nor other growth and yield parameters. These findings indicated that treatment effects were dominant only during the early growth phase, while no significant differences were observed during later growth stages and yield formation. This result suggested that the Sangga Sembalun variety was not well adapted to the lowland agroclimatic conditions of the study site.
